Frequently asked questions
Straightforward answers about online counselling, insurance, and privacy.
What is the free 15-minute consult?
A short call to ask questions, share a bit about what's going on, and see if we're a good fit. There's no cost and no obligation to book further sessions.
What happens in a first session?
We'll talk about what's bringing you in, what you'd like to be different, and anything you want to know about how I work. We'll go over consent and confidentiality, and finish with a sense of next steps. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with.
Can I use my insurance?
Many extended health plans cover sessions with a registered social worker. Receipts include my ACSW registration number so you can submit a claim. Direct billing isn't available yet. See fees and insurance for details.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed to book. Some insurance plans ask for a doctor's referral before they reimburse, so it's worth checking your plan.
What are the benefits of online counselling?
No commute, no waiting room, and no time lost to travel. You talk from a space where you already feel comfortable, sessions are easier to fit into a busy week, and you can reach me from anywhere in Alberta, including smaller communities with fewer local options. Research shows video counselling works about as well as meeting in person for many common concerns, including anxiety and depression. Your free consult is a good time to make sure it's the right fit for you.
Do you offer in-person sessions?
Right now, all sessions are online, by secure video or phone, so you can meet from anywhere in Alberta without the drive.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes. What you share in sessions is kept confidential and stored securely, following the standards of the Alberta College of Social Workers and Alberta privacy law.
What are the limits of confidentiality?
Some things can't stay private: a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, situations the law requires me to report (such as child-protection concerns), or a court order. If this ever comes up, I'll do my best to talk with you about it first.
What if I'm outside Alberta?
Sessions are for people located in Alberta at the time of the session. If you're travelling, let me know ahead of time and we'll make a plan, which may mean rescheduling. If you live outside Alberta, I'm happy to help you think about where to look for support closer to you.
This website and online sessions are not an emergency service. If you're in crisis, call 911 or call/text 988.
Still have questions?
A free 15-minute consult is a relaxed way to ask questions and see if we're a good fit.
